About

Our Story

We live in Maine. We drive east more weekends than is probably reasonable. We built this guide because the one we wanted didn’t exist.

The Maine coast gets covered — but not always honestly. The same Bar Harbor lobster roll photos. The same ten things to do in Acadia. The same reassurance that everything is charming and worth your time. We’ve been driving to Downeast Maine for years, and the places that actually stay with us are almost never the ones that lead the listicles.

We’re not travel writers. We’re not a tourism board, and we have no relationship with any of them. We live inland — close enough to the coast to know it well, far enough to make the drive a considered choice each time. We know what Route 1 looks like on a rainy Tuesday in October when the summer people are gone. We know which towns hold up and which ones only exist for July. We’ve gotten it wrong enough times to have opinions worth sharing.

The Maine Companion is a personal project. We write about places we’ve actually been to, in the seasons we’ve actually been there. When something is closed or changed, we try to update it rather than let stale information sit. If we recommend something, it’s because we think it’s worth your time.

Downeast Maine rewards the visitor who comes prepared. Not with gear — with expectations. The roads are long. Cell service disappears. Half the restaurants are seasonal and the other half keep irregular hours. The things that make it inconvenient are mostly the same things that make it worth it. We try to give you an honest picture of both.

We’re building this out steadily — more town guides, more seasonal editions, more detail on the places that deserve it. If something is missing or wrong, or if you know something we should know, we’d genuinely like to hear from you.

What this is

  • An independent guide with no affiliation to any tourism board or state agency

  • Written by people who live in Maine and visit these places regularly

  • Updated when things change, not left to go stale

  • Honest about crowds, closures, and what isn't worth the drive

What this isn't

  • Comprehensive — we cover what we know well, not everything

  • Affiliated with any business, inn, or restaurant we recommend

  • A substitute for calling ahead — things change, especially seasonally

  • Connected to the State of Maine or any official tourism body
