Seasonal Guide

Fall Foliage in Downeast Maine

September and October are the consensus best months on the coast. The crowds are gone, the light is lower and better, and the hardwood color against the dark spruce is as good as foliage in New England gets.

Full guide in progress — previews below

The full fall foliage guide is coming, with timing maps, driving routes, and trail recommendations for peak color. Here’s what we’re covering.

  • Timing

    When foliage peaks

Foliage in Downeast Maine typically peaks between October 8–20, running slightly later than the western Maine mountains. The spruce-fir forests stay dark green; it's the maples, birches, and aspens that turn. Elevation matters: inland and hilltop areas peak a week before the coast.

  • Drives

Route 172 through the Blue Hill hills

The approach to Blue Hill from Ellsworth on Route 172 is one of the best foliage drives in the state — a two-lane road through rolling hills with no particular traffic. The Blue Hill Mountain summit adds a panoramic view over the bay and the colored hills.

  • Acadia

    Hardwood color in the park

Acadia has significant hardwood sections — particularly around Eagle Lake and along the carriage roads — that turn vivid in mid-October. Crowds thin dramatically after Labor Day, which means Cadillac Mountain in October is a different experience entirely from August.

  • Events

    The Blue Hill Fair

The Blue Hill Fair runs Labor Day weekend — the unofficial end of summer and the opening of fall in Downeast Maine. Harness racing, livestock, and a midway that hasn't changed much in decades. Arrive early.

  • Hiking

    Trail conditions in fall

September and early October are the best hiking months of the year on the coast — bugs are gone, summer crowds are gone, and the weather is usually dry and clear. The Bold Coast Trail and Blue Hill Mountain in October are worth the trip specifically for the foliage.

  • Practical

    What closes and when

Businesses begin closing in mid-October and the pace quickens through the month. Many restaurants are gone by Columbus Day. Bar Harbor clears out fast. The towns that are open year-round — Blue Hill, Eastport — are the ones to plan around for late-fall visits.

The towns that hold up best in October

Some towns close up fast after Labor Day. These three stay interesting well into October.

  • Blue Hill

  • Bar Harbor

Acadia in fall — quieter trails, Cadillac without the August reservation scramble, and vivid hardwood color by mid-October.

  • Eastport

A year-round city that doesn't close in fall. The tidal phenomenon is unchanged, and the light on the bay in October is exceptional.
