About

Editorial Standards

How we decide what to cover, how we write about it, and what we do when we get it wrong.

Independence

The Maine Companion is editorially independent. We have no affiliation with the State of Maine, the Maine Office of Tourism, or any regional tourism board.

No business, inn, restaurant, or attraction has paid to appear in our guides — and none has been excluded because they didn't. Our editorial coverage is not for sale. If we recommend something, it is because we believe it is worth your time.

How we write

We write about places we have visited ourselves, in the seasons we say we visited them. We do not repackage press releases, DMO copy, or other publications' recommendations without firsthand knowledge. If we haven't been somewhere recently enough to speak to it with confidence, we say so or we leave it out.

We do not accept press trips, complimentary stays, or hosted meals in exchange for editorial coverage. If we eat somewhere, we pay for the meal. If we stay somewhere, we pay for the room.

Our descriptions of hours, prices, and seasonal availability are accurate as of the date noted on each guide. These things change — we update when we can, but we are a small operation and cannot guarantee real-time accuracy. Calling ahead is always the right call.

What we recommend

When we say something is worth doing, we mean we think it is worth your time — not that it is universally beloved, not that it is the best of its kind anywhere, not that it will suit every traveler. We try to be specific about who a recommendation is for and under what conditions it holds up.

We are not comprehensive. We cover what we know well. There are restaurants we haven't been to, trails we haven't walked, and towns we haven't written about yet. An absence from this guide is not a judgment — it usually just means we haven't gotten there yet.

Corrections

We get things wrong. Businesses close. Hours change. A place that was excellent two years ago may have changed hands. When we learn that something in our guides is inaccurate, we update it. If you've found an error — a closed business, a wrong price, a road that no longer exists — we want to know.

You can reach us through the contact page. We take corrections seriously and we publish them without defensiveness.

Limitations

This guide covers Downeast Maine — roughly the coast from Bar Harbor east to the Canadian border. It does not attempt to cover the full state of Maine. Midcoast, southern Maine, and the western mountains are outside our scope, not because they are less interesting, but because we write about what we know well.

We are not travel agents, licensed guides, or safety professionals. Information about trails, tides, ferries, and outdoor conditions is provided as general context. Conditions change. Use your judgment, consult local sources, and do not rely solely on anything we've written for decisions that affect your safety.

Found something out of date or incorrect? Let us know. We update our guides when we learn things have changed.
